  • Annie Besant was a socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, author, orator, educator, and philanthropist from the United Kingdom.
  • She was a staunch supporter of both Irish and Indian self-rule and was regarded as a champion of human liberty.
  • She went on to become an influential speaker for the National Secular Society (NSS), as well as a writer and Charles Bradlaugh's close friend. In India, she got interested in politics by entering the Indian National Congress.
  • When World War I broke out in 1914, she was one of the founding members of the Home Rule League, which fought for Indian independence and dominion status within the British Empire.
  • In late 1917, she was elected president of the Indian National Congress as a result of this.

 

  • In 1925, Sarojini Naidu was elected President of the Indian National Congress, and in 1947, she was elected Governor of the United Provinces and making her the first woman to hold the position of Governor in the Dominion of India.
