Correct Answer - Option 1 : 3,00,000

Given:

The winning candidate secured 57% of the total votes

The winner wins by a majority of 42,000 votes

Calculation:

Let the total votes case be 'x'.

Majority of votes = Number of votes got by winner - number of votes got by the other contestant

Percentage o votes got by the other contestant = 100 - 57% = 43%

Majority votes = 57% of x - 43% of x = 14% of x

42000 = 14% of x

Then, x = 3,00,000

∴ The number of voters are 3,00,000.
