In the context of Land Revenue Settlement of Colonial India. Which of the following statements is NOT correct?
1. In 1790, Lord Wellesley introduced the Permanent Settlement in Bengal Province.

Correct Answer - Option 1 : In 1790, Lord Wellesley introduced the Permanent Settlement in Bengal Province.

Option 1 is not correct.

  • Cornwallis was the Governor-General of India when the Permanent Settlement was introduced in 1793. Hence, option 1 is not correct.
  • By the terms of the settlement, the rajas and taluqdars were recognised as zamindars.
  • They were asked to collect rent from the peasants and pay revenue to the Company. 
  • The Zamindars were recognised as the owners of the entire land in their Zamindaris hence they have the right to sell. 
  • It made the right of land ownership hereditary
  • The amount to be paid was fixed permanently, that is, it was not to be increased ever in future.
  • It was felt that this would ensure a regular flow of revenue into the Company’s coffers.
  • At the same time encourage the zamindars to invest in improving the land.
