Concept-

  • The fungi constitute a unique kingdom of heterotrophic organisms.
  • True fungi are divided into the following classes-
    • Phycomycetes- Examples are mucor, rhizopus.
    • Ascomycetes- Examples are Neurospora, Claviceps, yeast.
    • Basidiomycetes- Examples are Agaricus, ustilago.
    • Deuteromycetes- Examples are Alternaria, Colletotrichum.

  • Yeast is a unicellular fungus.
  • Yeast grows on ripened fruits like grapes, sugarcane, date palm, and flowers.
  • Mycelium is absent in yeast.
  • If the yeast is dissolved in sugar solution then pseudomycelium is formed. Because in a sugar solution, it grows very fast i.e. it reproduces fast.
  • Yeast is also called fermentation fungi because different types of products are formed by fermentation with the help of yeast.

Yeast is used as a fermentation agent in breweries (wine industry).

  • Rhizopus and Mucor are known as bread mold.
  • Neurospora is red or pink mold. is used for the study of genetics in the Plant Kingdom.
