Correct Answer - Option 5 : x = y or relation between x and y can not be determine.

Calculation:

x2 – 9x + 14 = 0

⇒ x2 - 7x - 2x + 14 = 0

⇒ x(x - 7) - 2(x - 7) = 0

⇒ (x - 2) (x - 7)

⇒ x = 2, 7.

y2 + y – 42 = 0

⇒ y2 + 7y - 6y - 42 = 0

⇒ y(y + 7) - 6(y + 7) = 0

⇒ (y - 6) (y + 7) = 0

⇒ y = 6, -7.

Comparison between x and y (via Tabulation):

Value of x Value of y Relation
2 6 x < y
2 -7 x > y
7 6 x > y
7 -7 x > y

∴ The relation between x and y can not be determined.
