Calculation:

Let total number of votes be x.

Votes of Ram = 40% of x = 0.4x

Votes of Ranu = 60% of x = 0.6x

Difference = 0.6x – 0.4x 

⇒ 3500 = 0.2x

⇒ x = 3500/0.2

⇒ x = 17500

∴ Total number of votes are 17500.
