Correct Answer - Option 3 : \(\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{8}\)

Concept:

  • Sin (A + B) + Sin (A - B) = 2 sin A cos B
  • Sin (A + B) - Sin (A - B) = 2 cos A sin B
  • Cos (A + B) + Cos (A - B) = 2 cos A cos B
  • Cos (A - B) - Cos (A + B) = 2 sin A sin B

 

Calculation:

S = sin 20° sin 40° sin 80°

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over2\) sin 40° (2 sin 80° sin 20°)

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over2\) sin 40° [cos(80 - 20) - cos(80 + 20)]

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over2\) sin 40° [cos 60 - cos 100]

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over4\) sin 40° -  \(\rm 1\over2\) sin 40 cos 100

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over4\) sin 40° -  \(\rm 1\over4\) (2 sin 40 cos 100)

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over4\) sin 40° -  \(\rm 1\over4\) [sin (100 + 40) - sin(100 - 40)]

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over4\) sin 40° -  \(\rm 1\over4\) [sin 140 - sin 60] 

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over4\) sin 40° -  \(\rm 1\over4\) sin 140 + \(\rm 1\over 4\) sin 60

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over4\) (sin 40° - sin 140) + \(\rm \sqrt3\over 8\)

⇒ S = \(\rm 1\over4\) [sin 40° - sin (180 - 40)] + \(\rm \sqrt3\over 8\) 

∵ sin (180 - x) = sin x

⇒ S =  \(\rm 1\over4\) (sin 40° - sin 40) + \(\rm \sqrt3\over 8\) 

⇒ S = \(\boldsymbol {\rm \sqrt3\over 8}\)
