When Douglas was thrown into the pool, he was drowning down in a 9 feet deep pool and these 9 feet seemed 90 to him. He was under the vicious grip of terror but still conscious to plan a strategy of bouncing back as and when he would strike against the bottom. He did the same, but failed. He was all soaked and choked. Once again he was sinking down, this time in a subconscious state. His head still urged him to spring upwards like a cork but the second jump was no better. Then he started another journey down but this one was quite peaceful and relaxed.

The story ‘The Rattrap’ is entertaining and philosophical as well. The ironmaster mistakes the peddler for his old friend. This episode amuses the readers a lot. But the comparison between a rattrap and this world conveys a deep philosophical message. This world provides us with the stuff that allures us. Just as a bait is used to trap a rat, worldly enjoyments are used to trap human beings. The story so beautifully highlights the human dilemma that one wonders in awe whether one should accept the allurements or reject them.
