If x = a and y = b is the solution of the pair of equation x – y = 2 and x + y = 4, then find the values of a and b.

x – y = 2 …….. (i)

x + y = 4 …….. (ii)

Adding equations (i) and (ii), we get 2x = 6

⇒ x = 6/2 = 3

Substituting the value of x in equation (i) we get

3 – y = 2

⇒ y – 1

∴ x – 3 and x = a (given)

⇒ a = 3

And y = 1 and y – b (given)

⇒ 6 = 1

Hence, a = 3, 6 = 1
