Best answer

Balancing of Oxidation-Reduction reactions using Ion-electron (half reaction) method -

(i) Divide the given equation into two half reactions viz. oxidation and reduction half reactions.

(ii) Balance the two reactions separately according to the following steps.

(a) Balance the atoms other than H and O.

(b) Balancing of H: To the deficient side, add H+ if medium is acidic or H2O if medium is basic or netural.

(c) Balancing of O: To the deficient side, add H2O in acid medium, or OH in basic medium.

(d) Equalise the charge on both sides by adding suitable number of electrons to the side deficient in negative charge.

(iii) Multiply the two half reactions by suitable integers so that the total number of electrons gained in one half reaction is equal to the number of electrons lost in the other half reaction.

(iv) Add the two balanced half reactions and cancel any term common to both sides.
