Atmospheric air contains 20% O2 and 80% N2 by volume and exerts a pressure of 760 mm. Calculate the partial pressure of each gas.

Partial pressure = Mole fraction × Total pressure

= Vol. fraction × Total pressure

PO2 = 0.2 x 760 = 152 mm

PN2 = 0.8 x 760 = 608 mm
