What was the secret of the old man’s powers? Did the author learn about it? What was the significance of the words “Some things are known to all, Sahib, but others only to a few’?

The only secret of the old man’s powers was his concentration, self-confidence, strong will power and fearlessness. The author certainly and obviously did not learn about these powers because when he went to speak to him, he looked away from him. But he had respect for and faith in the man otherwise he could not have dared to walk across the fire-trench with him. The words ‘Somethings are known to all, Sahib, but others-to only a few’ show that the old man had a miraculous power and he had strengthened his will power which enabled him to know about the author’s arrival to rescue him in advance.
