Derry’s face is burnt on one side. Mr Lamb has lost his one leg. One of his legs is of tin. Thus they both suffer from some kind of physical disability. Derry suffers from a kind of inferiority complex. He avoids meeting people as he feels they find him terrible. Mr Lamb makes him feel normal about himself. By giving his own example, he inspires Derry to meet people and to talk to them. He offers to be Derry’s friend. He tells him that children often tease him for his tin leg but he doesn’t mind it. Derry feels a kind of familiarity with him. As Mr Lamb is also physically disabled like him, Derry feels a bond of friendship with him. The personal situation of both of them is alike to an extent. This alikeness brings them together and they develop a level of friendship.
डैरी का चेहरा एक ओर से जला हुआ है श्रीमान् लैम्ब अपनी एक टाँग खो चुके हैं। उनकी एक टाँग टिन की है। इस प्रकार वे दोनों किसी प्रकार की शारीरिक अक्षमता से ग्रस्त हैं। डेरी एक प्रकार की हीनभावना से ग्रस्त है। वह लोगों से मिलने से बचता है क्योंकि उसे लगता है कि उन्हें वह भयानक दिखता है। श्रीमान् लैम्ब उसे स्वयं के बारे में सामान्य अनुभव कराते है। अपना स्वयं का उदाहरण देकर वह डेरी को लोगों से मिलने व उनसे बातें करने के लिए प्रेरित करते हैं। वह डैरी के सम्मुख मित्रता का प्रस्ताव रखते हैं। वह उसे बताते हैं कि बच्चे प्रायः उनकी टिन की टाँग के लिए उन्हें चिढ़ाते हैं परन्तु वह इसका बुरा नहीं मानते हैं। डैरी को उनसे एक प्रकार का अपनापन अनुभव होता है। क्योंकि श्रीमान् लैम्ब भी डैरी की ही भाँति शारीरिक अक्षमता से ग्रस्त हैं, इसलिए उसे उनके साथ मित्रता का बन्धन महसूस होता है। दोनों की वैयक्तिक स्थिति कुछ हद तक एक जैसी है। इसी एकरूपता के कारण वे एक-दूसरे के करीब आते हैं और मित्रता के स्तर को विकसित करते हैं।
