Utility of Political Participation :
It has been considered since ancient time that public participation in politics is an important condition for a successful democracy or republic. It is also true that at present days in representative democracy, the citizens get a very little chance to participate in decision process. The result is that voters have very little knowledge about political problems.
Besides it, there are many other problems which are following.
1. Voters remain neutral towards voting.
2. Political representatives remain negligent towards the public responsibilities.
3. Misuse of post and power and corruption in administration is widespread.
Instead of above mentioned problems, if proper opportunities are given to citizens, they will certainly discuss the political matters and keep close eyes on activities of politicians. In this condition, the misuse of power and posts and corruption will reduce. Hence, political participation is an important factor or element not only for the formation of a good society, but also for living the life decently.
In the modem democratic system, it is necessary to motivate the political participation of common people. They should take part in public decisions more and more. Large democratic countries of the world suggest the following measures to increase the citizens participation in political matters.
1. There should be decentralisation of government and administration. Many responsibilities of taking decision be handed over to local bodies. In India, Panchayat Raj System is an important option to bring decentralisation.
2. Public opinion must be taken while making any new rule or an amendment in the constitution. This process will motivate the citizen to take more interest in political activities.
