The missionaries came to India in obedience to Jesus Christ. He claimed that he was the light of the world’. His disciples visited the different parts of the world as light. The missionaries challenged everything that appeared dark. In their schools countless young men and women received modern education. They became endowed with the ideals of service and uprightness and rectitude. Lakhs of people were treated, saved and restored to normal health in the hospitals set up by them. The standards of living of the tribals was raised and they started a new innings of life. Besides, the educational reforms unified spirits in Indians and they became united to fight for the cause as a United Nation. So, the Christian Missionaries in India have done lots of invaluable services for the country.
भारत में ईसाई मिशनरी का आगमन जीसस ईसू के मार्गदर्शन में हुआ था। उन्होंने घोषणा की थी कि वे अंधकार में भटक रहे संसार को सही मार्ग दिखाने आए हैं। उनके अनुयायी ‘प्रकाश’ के स्रोत के रूप में संपूर्ण संसार में घूमे। मिशनरी ने उन सभी चीजों को चुनौती दी जो अंधकार का प्रतीक था। उसके स्कूलों में अनेक युवक और युवतियों ने आधुनिक शिक्षा ग्रहण की। वे अपनी विशिष्ट प्रतिभा के बल पर अपने सेवा के क्षेत्र में एक आदर्श सावित हुए और स्वयं को ऊँचा उठाया तथा अपनी उदारता से लोगों का मन मोह लिया। इसके द्वारा स्थापित किए गए अस्पतालों में लाखों व्यक्तियों का इलाज हुआ, लाखों की जाने बचाई गई और वह एक सामान्य आदमी की तरह जीवन जीने लगे। इन्होंने जनजातियों के जीवन-स्तर पर धावा बोला और उन्होंने अपने जीवन की एक नई पाली की शुरूआत की। इसके साथ ही वह शैक्षणिक बदलाव लाये जिसके परिणाम स्वरूप भारतीयों की आत्मा आपस में जुड़ गई और संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका की तर्ज पर आपस में मिलकर देश की स्वतंत्रता हेतु लडने को मैदान में आए। इस प्रकार भारत में ईसाई मिशनरी ने देश के लिए ढेरों महत्त्वपूर्ण कार्य किए।
