CBSE Board Exam Changes: 15% Syllabus Reduction for Classes 10 and 12

In a recent announcement by Vikas Kumar Agrawal, the Bhopal regional officer for CBSE, it was revealed that the syllabus for Classes 10 and 12 will be reduced by up to 15%. This change is in line with CBSE's educational goals to encourage deeper exploration of subjects. Agrawal emphasized that the syllabus reduction is designed to provide students with the opportunity to study topics in greater depth, without the pressure of excessive content. This update reflects the board’s evolving approach to education.

CBSE Board Exam 2025: Key Changes in Assessment and Exam Pattern

  1. Increased Weightage for Internal Assessments
    One significant change is the increase in the weightage of internal assessments to 40%, with 60% still based on the final board exams. These internal assessments will include projects, assignments, and periodic tests, ensuring a well-rounded evaluation throughout the academic year. Vikas Kumar Agrawal stated, “This shift will encourage steady learning and provide students with a better opportunity to demonstrate their understanding.” The new approach prioritizes consistent learning over the pressure of high-stakes, end-of-year exams.

  2. Emphasis on Practical Knowledge and Skill-Based Questions
    In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CBSE will introduce an exam pattern that emphasizes skill-based questions rather than rote learning. For the 2025 board exams, nearly 50% of the question paper will focus on assessing students' practical knowledge and problem-solving abilities. This change aims to enhance critical thinking and evaluate students' ability to apply concepts in real-world scenarios.

CBSE Exam Structure: Transition to Two-Term System by 2026

  • Shift to Two-Term Structure:
    While the current single-term exam format will remain in place for the 2025 session, CBSE has announced plans to introduce a two-term exam structure starting in the 2025-26 academic year. Vikas Kumar Agrawal confirmed that preparations for this transition are already in progress. The move aims to alleviate stress by offering more frequent assessments throughout the year, rather than relying solely on a single, end-of-year exam.
