CBSE 2025: Key Changes in Exam Format and Other Updates
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced several significant changes for the 2025 board exams that will impact both students' preparation and the examination process. These updates, aimed at fostering analytical skills, ensuring exam integrity, and meeting the diverse needs of students, reflect CBSE's ongoing efforts to align with contemporary educational standards.
Key Changes for CBSE 2025 Exams:
-
Reduction in Short and Long-Answer Questions
For the 2025 exams, CBSE will reduce the number of short and long-answer (constructed response) questions in both Class 10 and Class 12 exams. This change aligns with the goal of shifting away from rote learning and promoting analytical and critical-thinking skills. It encourages deeper engagement with subjects, moving beyond simple memorization.
-
Increased Focus on Competency-Based Questions
A larger portion of Class 12 exams will consist of competency-based questions. These questions test students' ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts, supporting the focus of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 on experiential and application-based learning.
-
Higher Internal Assessment Weightage
Internal assessments will account for 40% of the total marks, with the remaining 60% based on the final board exams. This includes projects, periodic tests, assignments, and other evaluations that provide a more holistic view of students' abilities throughout the year.
-
Mandatory 75% Attendance and Enhanced Security Measures
To qualify for the 2025 board exams, students must maintain a minimum attendance of 75%. Exceptions will be made for medical reasons or participation in extracurricular activities, provided proper documentation is submitted. Furthermore, starting in 2025, all CBSE exam centers will be required to install CCTV cameras in examination halls to enhance security. Schools failing to meet this requirement will not be allowed to serve as exam centers.
-
Special Examinations for Athletes and Olympiad Participants
CBSE will continue to provide special provisions for students involved in national or international sports events or Olympiads. Students whose exam dates clash with these events will be eligible for alternative exam dates, allowing them to balance their academic and extracurricular commitments.
-
Opening of New CBSE Sub-Regional Office in Tripura
In an effort to improve the performance of CBSE-affiliated schools in Tripura, CBSE will open a new sub-regional office in Agartala. This initiative aims to support educational reforms and enhance academic outcomes in the region, particularly following concerns over the performance of the Vidyajyoti Schools. These schools, converted to English-medium CBSE institutions, had lower-than-expected pass rates in recent exams. The new office will work closely with state education authorities to manage exams effectively and promote student success.
These updates are expected to reshape the board exam experience, providing a more comprehensive evaluation of students while focusing on critical thinking, practical application, and flexibility for those with unique needs.
