एक सड़क के दोनों ओर आमने - सामने दो मकान हैं , जिनकी ऊँचाइयाँ क्रमशः 8 मीटर और 15 मीटर हैं । एक 17 मीटर लम्बी सीढ़ी सड़क के बीच किसी बिंदु पर ऐसे लगाई जाती है जिससे सीढ़ी का दूसरा सिरा दोनों मकानों के शिखर तक पहुँचता है । सड़क की चौड़ाई ज्ञात कीजिए ।

समकोण ΔABP

समकोण ΔABP में ,

AP2 = AB2 + BP2

(17)2 = (8)2 + BP2

289 = 64 + BP2

या BP2 = 289 − 64 = 225

या BP = 15 मीटर

पुनः समकोण ΔCDP में PC2 = PD2 + CD2

(17)2 = PD2 + (15)2

289 = PD2 + 225

या PD2 = 289 − 225 = 64

या PD = 8 मीटर

अतः सड़क की चौड़ाई = BP + PD

= 15 + 8 

= 23 मीटर।
