The d-electronic configuration of an octahedral Co(II) complex having magnetic moment of 3.95 BM is :

(1) \(t_{2 g}^{6} \ e_{g}^{1}\)

(2) \(t_{2 g}^{3} \ e_{g}^{0}\)

(3) \(t_{2 g}^{5} \ e_{g}^{2}\)

Best answer

Correct option is : (3) \(t_{2 g}^{5} \ e_{g}^{2}\)

\(CO^{2+}\) + complex having \(\mu\) = 3.95 BM

Hence number of unpaired electron = 3

\(Co^{2+}\Rightarrow 3d^7 = t_{2g}^{5}e_g^5\)
